Schofield Building

The ''Schofield Building'' is a historically recently renovated 1902-built 172 foot 14 story high-rise office building in downtown Cleveland's Nine-Twelve District that stands at the corner of the streets of East Ninth and Euclid Avenue.〔http://skyscraperpage.com/cities/?buildingID=21548 ''Euclid Ninth Building'' Retrieved on 2015-09-11〕 Despite the deceiving lackluster appearance of the building in recent years the Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants company is spending millions of dollars with the help of the state of Ohio in restoring the former Cleveland icon to its once legendary ornamental glory exemplified in its 1900's original facade and cornice.〔Glaser, S. ''Cleveland's Kimpton Hotel set to open in late 2015 at East Ninth and Euclid'' http://www.cleveland.com/travel/index.ssf/2015/02/clevelands_kimpton_hotel_set_t.html Retrieved on 2015-09-11〕 The hotel will be operational by the end of 2015 and will be in the vincity of multiple other hotels and hotel projects along Euclid and Prospect, including the Metropolitan which lies directly across the street from the Kimpton, the future hotel along Euclid in the CAC Building, The Holdiday Inn, the Huntington Bank Building, and the Embassy Suites.
==The Schofield Legacy==
In the 1960s, the building was refaced to make it less oranmental, unfortunately, this also made the building look quite unattractive in the process.〔http://www.clevelandareahistory.com/2010/05/pleasant-surprise-schofield-building.html ''A pleasant surprise: The Schofield building'' Retrieved on 2015-09-11〕 This accounted for the fact of both local critics and architects in other cities calling for the removal of the monstrosity from the Cleveland landscape. Sadly, there was not many who even attempted to advocate for the building having an inherent value in the architectural history of Cleveland. This may be attributed to the fact that not many knew what lied underneath the "ugly" shelling. Consequently, these calls to erase it from the cityscape persisted until the 2000s.
Little did anyone realize that the building was arguably the masterwork of one of Cleveland's most important architects, Levi Schofield. Schofield was also responsible for the much revered and respected Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument on Public Square.〔http://www.clevelandgatewaydistrict.com/history/buildings-landmarks/lower-euclid-ave/ ''Lower Euclid Avenue District'' Retrieved on 2015-09-11〕 Cleveland has long been held to the standard and national model for restoration projects that can be enumerated, these include Playhouse Square, Terminal Tower, Cleveland Arcade, Fenn Tower, Warehouse District, and many other projects.
Despite these seemingly impossible forces vying for the eradication of the Schofield, the building is finally being allowed to reveal its long lost secret that it is actually one of the most beautiful and important structures ever erected in Cleveland. It sits in good company on the Nine-Twelve's upper area, with the historic Rose Building, the City Club Building, the Union Commerce Building, The Cleveland Trust Company Building, The 9 Cleveland and The Cleveland Athletic Club Building.
